Mentalization Based Treatment for Families
MBT-F can be described as a set of skills and as an attitude for the entire family. MBT-F can be accomplished in family therapy, multi-family groups or in a combination of both by:
Stimulating mentalizing in a non-threatening environment. This is accomplished through activities that promote shifts in perspective and understanding of each other’s behaviors and experiences, without the intensity of fighting and arguing. Families are able to increase their capacity to understand on a profound level that creates meaningful emotional connection.
Objectives of MBT-F:
- Helps families maintain the capability to mentalize even in stressful situation
- Helps families shift from non-mentalizing cycles or impasses to mentalizing discussions that can promote trust, security, and attachment.
- Helps families restore mentalizing to solve the problems they are struggling with.
