Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a cognitive behavioral treatment that has demonstrated efficacy through years of research studies as the most effective therapy option for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). In this treatment, clients learn to gradually expose themselves to feared thoughts and situations while also refraining from engaging in any compulsive behaviors.
ERP is used to treat the following disorder:
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder- OCD occurs in two to five percent of the population. It is a disorder that involves thoughts, images or impulses that repeatedly occur and feel outside of an individual’s control. The individual often experiences intense unwanted feelings of anxiety, disgust, doubt, or discomfort. These symptoms are generally very time consuming and interfere in the individual’s life.
The therapy is generally conducted for a period of 18 to 36 sessions lasting about an hour and a half per session. This is done with the support of a therapist and the client learns to manage the symptoms independently.
